CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Tatara Totsuka
Character Canon: K Project

History: Wiki link is go!

AU History: Much like in canon, Totsuka was abandoned by his birth parents when he was only 3 years old. Whatever their reasons were, if they already had too many children, or they had other plans for themselves, he does not know and never shows any interest in finding out. The couple who finds him in the park where he was first abandoned later adopt him, though that also doesn't go well for long - his adoptive father's gambling destroys their relationship within a few years, prompting his adoptive mother to leave.
Totsuka grew up poor but cheerful for it, winding up a really self-sufficient child from an early age due to their many difficulties. Often, they'd have trouble paying bills. Sometimes they'd have trouble paying for food. He learned to forage from childhood, wandering out into the forest to find edible things and very likely got to be on friendly terms with pokémon as he went.

Throughout his school career, he was difficult to deal with for his teachers. Not because he was the type to cause much trouble or pick on other students, but simply because it was hard to find a niche for him to fit into the world. He changed his preferences often enough to leave anyone exasperated, until he finally settled on becoming a trainer.

It wasn't until Totsuka was a teenager that he formed his first important bonds, despite his amicable nature. Much to the concern of his teachers, he became best friends with a powerful enlightened, who happened to be the kind of person most everyone expected to wind up a delinquent. True to form, Totsuka began getting into more trouble than before, but he still never looked back.
Now at 19 years of age, he continues not to.

Canon Personality: Most notably, Totsuka is a people-person. He likes people, enjoys being with people, and he reads people well, which is a great prerequisite in any given setting. Given his impossibly persistent optimism, this can make him look naive, but he simply chooses to look at the good in people a lot of the time, opting to be the calm, kind person when someone is upset or angry. This displays impressive emotional strength on his part as well, as, even under threat of injury or death, he can remain calm. Though, on the note of threat of physical harm: Totsuka is a pacifist to the bone. He doesn't do harming people, he doesn't want anybody to come to harm because of him, period. Even when someone tried their level best to kill him, he will hide that from his friends so that nobody gets hurt in retaliation. And while his life gets threatened, he does the sensible thing and runs the hell away. How this fits in with him being a member of Homra, which looks like a gang of vaguely superpowered thugs?

...Yeah, nobody actually knows.

Which is to say, Totsuka is weird. He's weird even to his teammates and to his two best friends, nobody knows what he's even doing among them, but that doesn't deter him any. In the country where everyone is very careful about everyone else's personal space, he gestures broadly and dramatically and often, he presents completely ridiculous suggestions with the most serious of faces only to drop them a minute later, and in a rag tag bunch of fighting types, he is the lone pacifist. He can threaten, though, having a decent way with words. Of course that's generally bluffing, but when the people you talk to don't fully know what they're dealing with, it can be very convincing.

This is not to say he doesn't get in trouble. Because he does. He is optimistically reckless, never one to sweat the small stuff because he's sure it will all work out somehow. And he's never been wrong about it, it always does somehow work out, and the odds are in his favour in what looks like luck, but is mostly his people skills and guts at work. Despite a great deal of accidents, it saves him most of the time. All the time really, until that last one. And he kept saying he'd be more careful, too, but he knew very well it'd turn on him eventually - sooner rather than later.

Still, this makes him seem a fairly carefree person, confident in his mindset and his abilities and simply in himself. It leads to him being pretty laid back, easy to get along with. Despite his weirdness, he's just nice, approachable and easy to talk to, and readily takes care of people who need a hand. It's his job in Homra to make sure new people learn the ropes, to be the person to turn to, and to make sure they feel part of the group, and he does it incredibly well, because he does his best to see people for who they really are. (Even when they're coming at him with a knife, because he clearly has priorities.) Also because he will rope a handful of them into the oddest activities apropos of nothing, and that helps form bonds, too.
Oftentimes he knows just what to say to people, placing armor piercing remarks with enough subtlety nobody gets embarassed or upset or angry, which just helps to drive the point home: Totsuka really cares about people. A lot. He may be a manipulative little shit (and he is, he really is), but his intentions are pure.

His other job at Homra is not really talked about openly, but still plain to see to the people who know them well: he is the one who keeps Mikoto in check. This might seem backwards: the weakest member of the group keeping the boss, the king, the most powerful one under control? Well, more like reinstating his selfcontrol. Totsuka and Mikoto go way back. They know each other very well, and again it's Totsuka's calm and his people skills and his utter faith in Mikoto and the bond they share that save the day here, because he can just come in and talk to him and help him keep a hold on his temper. This is not baseless faith, either, apparently - or he wouldn't have lasted as many years as he did, and would've been burned to ash a long time ago.

Despite the responsibilities and being clearly intelligent, Totsuka is a troll and a goofball. Unashamed indoor skateboarding, and not taking himself nearly as seriously as his dramatics seem to imply (as he talks about someone who's ~very soul was touched~ by something he did) demonstrate that nicely. He's someone who seems to pick up a different hobby every month, someone who knows a lot about a broad range of topics, never settling for any one thing until he picked up the camera. Even that stuck more for sentimental reasons than anything else - as the memories with Homra are precious to him, he strives to keep them somehow. He knows his days are numbered, and he wants a way for himself and his friends to keep the good times around, even as he subtly, quietly, removes himself from the picture by way of never being in the videos himself. He says that he's not used to being caught on film, but knowing his awareness of his own very decreased life-expectancy, that looks rather like an excuse. It's clear that he hasn't told any of his friends he knows this, either - after all, whether it'll come to pass or not, it's hardly worth fretting and panicking about when there's nothing to be done about it either way, right?

With all his hobbies, it doesn't seem like Totsuka has a particular goal in life at all. He's happy where he's at, and it gives him the freedom to try out all sorts of things whenever he feels like it. Never the less he likely would've kept an open mind for anything that strikes his fancy, but if there's one thing to be said about his seemingly whimsical and/or crazy life choices, he does stick with them. There aren't a lot of middle schoolers who decide they will be a King's vassal one day and actually end up becoming exactly that.

AU Deviation: There's very little difference here! One thing he had to struggle with more than in canon is the Union school system, because it's geared toward people finding their place in society, and he's never really felt like fitting anywhere.
Of course, Homra as an organization would be less of a force to be reckoned with as well. It would still be a gang, of course, but since the man at the center of it isn't quite as legendary as that, Totsuka would be both less able to defend himself with his reputation and less under fire due to his position.

Canon Abilities: As a member of the Red Clan, Totsuka possesses the power of the Red Aura. Generally, the Red Aura can be used to augment attacks or weapons in a fight, or as an attack of its own, to form barriers, or as just flat out explosive firepower.
...but Totsuka is by far the least inclined towards fighting out of the entire clan, and so his powers are really, really, really weak. He's pretty good at cauterizing wounds with it if he has to, going more for precision since he doesn't have a great deal of power. He could probably light smaller items on fire, too, but that's about it.

Enlightened Abilities: Totsuka isn't going to be Enlightened, instead he's Far From Ordinary with the Kindred Soul ability. His specialty is the Fire type.

Starter Pokémon:
A Fletchling (Kotori), a Darumaka (Marko), and a Seedot (Nara)!

Notes/Special Considerations:

SAMPLES

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
[He smiles brightly.] They're friends!

-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
That's asking a lot, isn't it? I can't speak for all of humanity. I just want to be happy, and see as much of this amazing world as I can, and try as many things as I can, and because everything's so vast, it's not like I'm ever going to run out in my lifetime, right? If there's anything you can say I'd like for everyone to have, it's that we all find a place where we're happy, something we love doing, and friends we want to hang on to.

-What would you say the most important occupation is within your city?
Haa, would you say there is one? I mean, isn't everyone important?

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
I think everyone is amazing in their own way! So long as we can find out what works for us, isn't that enough?

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
I want to meet all sorts of Pokémon, so I'm not sure I'm really looking for something in particular. I just like making friends.

-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
Purity of spirit! Haha, honestly, you'd have to ask them, not me.

-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
Aah, I'm not sure. I'm actually pretty selfish! I just do what I feel like, so I don't think I'm a really good choice. I'd try to get out of it, I think.

-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
Eeh? Well, if they were all away... I might just call my human and Enlightened friends? The rangers are really helpful! And if I can't do that then I can just make more friends along the way! It'll all work out somehow.

-You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
More than anything, I just want to see something new. So out of those three, maybe wisdom? I think finding out more about what things were like back then is really interesting!

-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
I would love to be an incredibly powerful flying firebreathing dragon! Or maybe a psychic type, they can teleport anywhere and read people's minds! Or maybe a water type to explore the depths of the ocean and freeze over whole lakes with a wave of my hand! Or a ghost who can walk through walls, or- ... [He laughs.]
Well, actually, I'll pass. I'm fine the way I am.

-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
All of them! I want to see as much of the world as I can.
